Auckland, this day. Tub death of Captain Daveney, the announcement of which was lolographod yostorday, isgrcatly regretted. For the past two lvontbs ho had been ailing, and his death, while not wholly unexpected by his family, came as a sur'ptiso to tho gronter immbor of his.friends. Captain Daveney was born in (he neighbourhood of Norwich, Bugland, and at an early age h o joined a cavalry regimout in tho Austriau army, After about three years' service ihero he rotnrnod to England, and joined the lnuishilling Dragoons, rising' to tho rank- of captain. With his regiment ho wont to India shortly ufoor tho mutiny and served several years there, but was not onga»ed..in aefcivo service. Iu 1808 ho retired from the army, and about the Bamo year camo to Now Zealand, landing at Wellington, A little later ho cauio on to Auckland, <wd had resided here over since, Captain Daveney was prominently connootcd with tho votoranB 1 organisation in this province Ho was chairman of tho Veterans' Association, n member of the executive, of tho Votorans' Home, and for ut number of yours he held tho position of paymaster of Imperial pensions in Auoklahd. He was also secretary of the Northorn Olub lor some years' and at the timo of his death was chairman of, tho Onohunga Fublio Library, Mrs Daveney survivos her husband, and there aro two sons and two daughters,
