' Auckland, this day. At the Supreme Court William Henry Oobley pleaded not guilty to a chnrgo of stealing from a dwelling at Waimauku on March 14th, Tho evidence showed that accused and one Williamson sharadtho same wharc. On tho night of flic robbery Williamson woke up owl lnwrd iho prisoner moving about, and in the morning ho missed his purse, containing money. Two const aides deposed to questioning prisoner next day, and the latter admitted having givou tho money and purso to a man known as" Conn." Whou ho was 'asked why, prisonot,replied that ho had heard tho polioe wore after him, and ho was afraid, " Conn " whs to <>ivo him half tho monoy when ho returned from town,
The defence was that prisoner was a man of" peculiar" mind, thus accounting for his statement about giving tho money to |: Conn,"
After a short retirement the jury returned with i vord'et of not guiliy. His Honor: Well, thins another case of a most lamont'iblomiscarriage ol justice on tho part of a jury, Tho Forouun: But, your Honor, wo are tho jury.
His Honor: You had a duty to per form,
Tho Foreman: And wo have dono it to she best of onr ability.
