Thb following is the report to be presented by the Waihi District School Oommiitoe at the meeting of householders to be held on Tuesday evening, April 25th, at 7 o'oloek: 11 At the annual moeting of householders held on April 23rd, 1904, the following gentlemen were oleoteJ a committee to t>raside over educational matters in the district for the yoar that has now passed: —Messrs McCarthny, Nicholson, Newdick, P. G, Morgan, Newth, Hartly, Phillips, Torrens, and Henderson, At a meeting held immediately afterwards Mr H. McCarthny was elected ohairman, and Mr John Henderson secretary and treasurer. Early in tho year Mr W. H. Phillips .•resigned owing to having left the district, and the committee appointed Mr Charles Goodndge in his place, which appointment the Board accepted. Mr H, 1. Torrens also left the district, and his resignation was received Into in January of this year: and there being only two more meetings, the committee did not think it advisable to appoint another in his place,

Since the Christmas holidays the headmaster has a'so been 'f ss working the sohool a' a great disadvantage v through being und?rg'.atfed, but tbo com--11 m t'es havo been notified of the appoint--8 ment of an extra junior assistant and pupil id teacher, whiob will greatly help matters 1 , B in that direction, " The committee throughout the year " have advocated the establishment of an infants' school at tbo eastern end of Waihi, of to teaoh up to the Ist standard, which the pq Board agreed to on the recommenda- . tion of the Chief Inspector, Mr Petrie; and when asked before Christmas to have the as same erected at tho end of the holidays it they stated they had no money, and had . applied to the Education Department for a |( grant of £590. To assist the Board the committee wrote a letter to the Minister > e > of Education, urging the necessity of an n- infants'school, but without success. When 1. tho Hon, R. J. The Premier pointed . out the disadvantages of splitting up the educational work of the district, but thought it might be advisable later on to have an infanta'school. ,' ; y' "A deputition also waited Premier to urge the establishment vr classes in manual instruction and cookery, ; s " : ; and asked for a grant to be made for this x purpose. He promised to give the matter ...f due consideration. 'M "As far as funds would permit, the ; ;i oommittee havo oarried out improvements in and around tho school. The ground at the back has been partially cleared, : - but needs a good deal spent upon it yet. A large cupboard has been made for the |D stowage of uniforms, etc., belonging to the school cadets. There are now two companics of full strength, and the committee ' think the householders will agree tliat . 10 they aro a oredit to the sohool. A new s, fenoe is needed for the front of the sohool and the headmaster's reaidonce, and this :; matter has been urged on the Board. The , ' same body has promised to erect a fence, !( but so far nothing has been done. "Since the last annual meeting the i, sejjtic tank has been oreoted, and although . some trouble was experienced at first, it is now working satisfactorily, and in a' n short time will fully recompense the comit mittoe for the outlay of £2B " We now come to the' work of the sohool. The number on the roll at the - '( end of March, 1905, was: Boys, 408; J girls, 359; total, 767. The average attsn. ]; dance for the quarter ending Mavoh was '■s 659. Since the last annual meeting the : school has been inspected both by the* ■; j chief Inspector (Mr Petrie, M.A.) ind by ■!; MrE.K. Mulgan, M.A., both of the r»- ■,'s= ports being favourable. The standard examinations by Inspector Crowe took § place in Novomber last, the number in : $ attendance at the time of the examination ® 1 being 697. Tbero were only two failures. if t Mr Crowe stated in bis report that "the I written work was very neatly arranged ( and oral answers fully and clearly stated. il j The primer classos were being exceedingly V ifJ well taught and trained; their work in all subjeots of instruction was distinctly credi- : table, aud gave ample evidonce of very 'JM effioiont teaohing. Discipline, tone, and , | behaviour very good." i , "Tho oommitte wrote to Mr Benfce, headmaster, complimenting him and his ,::t| stiff of teachers upon the excellent work done. There are 8 pupils upon the High Sohool roll, the clam being under the supervision of Mr A. Gotland, 8.A., who ;•$ sucoeeded Mr McSportan, / "^ The new building, opened by the Premior on tho 16th of March, is a great convonience,and affords greater facilities for tho work in this division being carried on in a more satisfactory manner, although up to tho present time, beyond sitting ao- - .-'S commo.dation, no other equipment or appantos has been supplied. The com- $$ mittee have made frequent appeals to tbe Tifl Board to get this rnattor aeon to.
