ld One can imagine the horror of the passengers who do not read tin papors when they descend fron railway trains at refreshment station! on the Government railways to fine the bar now and forever closed.' It is no longer possible to slake one's thirst with alcoholic liquors at any 3 Government railway station in New Zealand. It is an axiom with a large portion of the travelling public in this and other lands, that the .more they travel the more they must refresh. Everyone knows the woman with a large basket of sandwiches and four children, sur- ' rounded by a sea of crumbs, who makes travelling in railway cars a 1 horrid nightmare; and one knows still better tho passenger who considers it essential when on a journey lo buy a bottle of beer wherever it is to be bought, and drink t in the carriage, offering the nearest pro hibitionist a drink after he hag finished. He is to be swept out, and if he wants to imbibe to the discomfort of fellow-passengers, the Government will not be a party to it. Thiß railway-station prohibition should hav« an excellent effect on persons whd supply the wayside sandwich and the cup of tea to the fleeting passengers, and it should make them think more kindly of those who cannot drink scalding tea nor eat steel sandwiches. It will also obviate the rash and struggle that hitherto have happened in the railway bars; and it will make the carriage atmosphere purer. It will be a boon io women passengers who do not want to be offended by the beery breath of men who are always drinking, and will make less frequent the railway revels of strenuous football players who, after wrestling with tho leather, have sometimes wrestled with several drinks. There will be fewer broken windows, and the guards will not have to be expert wrestlers, The passengers who haye on various occasions in the past thrown beer bottles out of the window, to the danger of linemen, will not have any beer bottles to throw in future. l The tendency of the change is for t sobriety, and so tho Government, in upsetting the old custom, relieves a s very great r.urnbwr of people by enr- il tailing the liberties of a few who '' p have not much control when at home } and less when abroad. There are '' evidences that tile adamantine sand. J wich, and the boiling cup of water that has turned pale thiough lookv> nig at a packet of tea, are also lo be w things of the pas', and 'bar a riew era fi: with tho banishment of jj! .he beer. . ~
