Mrs Gilmour, Mayoress, received the foltowing telegram from the. Bight Hon* ourable the Premier :—"I fear that time will not permit me giving you two days at Waibi, bat will try and come the evening of one day aad ppend the next day with you. Delighted to accept' the hospitality and entertainment by yonrseif and ladies of Waihi, considering the same a very great compliment.—(Signed) K. J. Seddon." The Mayoress, at the head of a large and active committee of lidies, i* working hard to ensure a hearty welcome to Mr. Seddon, on the occasion of his visitvJp Waihi.
In response to the Mayoress' invitation a number of ladies met the other afternoon to consider the best means of helping to make the coming reception of the Premier the success its importance deserves. The Mayoress occupied the chair, and there were also' present Mpsdames McArthur Henderson, Morpacb, Foster, Bnckland, Hamilton, Scott, White, Slevin, Hartley, >nd Joll. Mesdames McWilliam, Benge and Donaldson aleo signified their willingness to act on the committee. Messrs. Donaldson (president) and Carpenter (seeretiry) of tho Liberal and Labour Federation in W»ihi were also present Mr. Donaldson explained very folly, to the ladies the action the local League bad taken and its very earnest desire to make the hearty and general one. For this reason the League had decided tendering him a monster social to which everyone would be heartily welcomed. This form of reception had been, decided npon because it woold enable them to have the honour and benefit of the company of }he ladies, a feature, he felt sure that would be much appreciated by the Premier, and would ensure the success of the function. It was resolved that the Mayoress send a wire asking Mr Seddon if he could stay two Jays in Waibu The question of the socinl taking the form of a garden party was uho suggested and met with much favour. Tho meeting also wished to know what work would be required of them because wiih a caterer to supply all the refreshments their duties would be very light. Mr Donaldson pointed out that the idea of the League was not to impose any heavy or arduous labour labour upon the ladies, buc to ask for their co operation and also that they generally supervise the dis ribufon of the refreshments and advise she committee of gentlemen genera ! ly; and promote the success of fcbo function. Mr Carpenter was asked to procir6 information n« 'to the cost of e itering and various other matters for the next meet - ing. The meeting was most successful and enthusiastic. Mr .Donaldson, on behalf of the League, thanked tho Mayoress and other ladies present for their willingness to help, rnd expressed the view that with tho ladies working also the success of the entertainment was assured. The ladies ate holding another meeting this afternoon.
Mr D. Mason, of Napier, suporaedea Mr J. Mclndoe, 03 assistant clerk at _ the Warden's Court. The latter has received instructions to proceed at once to Cororaandel, aud his euccessor will be here on Monday next.
The annuil harvest thanksgiving services will be held in Wesley Charch tomorrow. The festival will be continued by a fruit social on Monday evening. The Church is being decorated for the occasion. The full choir will render harvest anthems and also lead the congregational singing of harvest hymns. At St John's Anglican Church to-mor-row, harvest thanksgiving services will be held. In the afternoon it is hoped to have something of an innovation, in the shape of a children's flower service. The preacher at the evening service will bo the Rev. H. Reeve, vicar of Inglewood, I Taranaki.
At. the week's shooting at Trentham, commencing on Thursday week next a local team of five members of the No. 3 Ohinemuri Rifles will represent Waihi. The team include Lieutenant R. S. Ready. Corporal J. Cornes;, Lance Corporal E. McGee, Privates J./Parslow and S. Clark. They left by -the j 8 o'clock coach this morning. It is expected that they will give a good accounft of themselves.
At a meeting of the Kaponga School Committee recently, the schoolmaster re•"Glr'ted of the scholars, a boy 13 years of to R efc U P »* 4 o'clock in the morning, &S»k 15 cows, which> took him until 8 o'clocfoaud then get ready for school. After 1 schodt-fce had to go home again and milk his 15 co'\v«, finishing somewhere about seven. The Spy was said to be rather Bharp when he first wSB* to sehool, but"as the ccws came m he got « ra ° u ? u y duller and duller.! ISvery extra had to milk affected his intellect.
To-morrow's church services are advertised as follows: At the Wesley Church there will be a Harvest Festival. The ] Rev >V. Barnett of Masterton and Christchurch will officiate at the Baptist Church morning and evening. At the Presbythrian Church the Rev. J. L. Pattuilo will preach morning and evening. His subject for the evening will be " The Proper TreatmenS of Our .Enemies-" The Church of Christ hold their Sunday School Anniversary in the Foresters' Hall at~2.30 p.m. The Rev, Dra'ke will conduct special services; also at 7 p.m., when Mr. Evered will sing a solo. At the Primitive Methodist Church Mr: Toy will preach in the morning, his subject being " Light as a type of God," and tha Rev J. Southern will prench in the evening, his subject i being" Shortsightedness."
