(Received Feb. 20,9.30 a.m.) St Petersburg, Feb. 18 Further details of the assassination of the Grand Duke Sergius by a dynamite bomb are now available, It transpires that immediately after the 22nd the extremists sentenced to death Sergius, Treapoff, and others connected with the recent butchery in Moscow and St. Petersburg.-
Sergins's wife was twice anonymously warned not to accompany her husband on drives, as nobody wished her harm. Yesterday, Sergins took his first drive unaccompanied at three in the afternoon. Sergins left the Nicholas Palace in a closed carnage, intending to drive to the Russian Bath in Tverskaja-street. Cabs followed containing detectives. Near (the Law Courts, a sledge containing two men, one being dressed as a workman, shot ahead of the , Duke's/carriage, and then slowed, allowing the Duke to pass. ■ At this moment, one of the occupants of the sledge rose and threw a bomb under the carriage, There was a terrific explosion, breaking all ihe windows of the Law Courts, and blowing the carriage to pieces, except tho wkel3. The horses were unhurt, but bolted and collided with a wall, and were killed. Sergins's head and limbs were torn from his body, wliich was scarcely identifiable. The murderers were arrested. One remarked; u \ don't care, I have done my job." The explosion attracted a crowd, some picking up fragments of the carriage and torn clothing. The Duchess, hatless and cloak, less, rushed to the scene, but was persuaded to leturn to the Palace, where the remains of the Duke were conveyed. A policeman saw a man armed with a revolver running. When arrested, he admitted that he was the agent of the Socialist revolutionary party, and said he was gratified. The Duchess is uninjured. Tho Grand Duke Sergins will be buried in the Cathedral fortress of Peter Paul. Another account states that a man dressed in workman's holiday clothes was concealed close to tho Nikolsky Gate, near the Arsenal. As the carriage emerged from the tunnel formed by the tower of the Nikolsky Gate, the man threw a bomb, blowing Sergius's head to atoms, and reducing the body to a formless mass. A policeman who was watching was the only actual eye-witness. He arrested the murderer,, who was bleeding at the head and hands, and who scarcely tried to escape. He shouted " Freedom" all tho way to the Nation, ami refused to reveal his identity. He is sup. posed to bo a student pledged to revenge the Moscow massacre on December 19. There are indications that groups of the working classes in Moscow were aware of the date and hour of the attempt to be made. The Czar has issued a manifesto deploring the loss of his uncle and friend," whoso whob life of activity . and care was constantly devoted to the service of ourselves and the fatherland." lie hoped his subjects would feel tli9 heartiest sympathy with the Imperial House of which he was the head. Only the brains were found. The trunk and limbs were collected and taken to the Nicholas Palace. The driver died on tho way to the Hospital, . ; One of tho assassins was previous-, ly injured. Another has confessed to executing a revolutionary decree. A number of students who were scattering revolutionary proolama- , tions outside the Kremlin were roughly handled by the crowd. The Czar is in a siate'of consternation. i. The concensus of opinion is that tne Grand Duke Sergius was the Czar's chief reactionary counsellor. A revolutionary demonstration was held outside his St Petersburg residence, and tho "Marseillaise" was sang exultingK The Government has warned the Putiloff. works' managers that war material must bo promptly delivered 3r orders will be placed abroad.
