Two of the Waihi Fedcrnl bandsmen won creditaMo posinons in the 13 flat and Baritone stdos-H Penno, who was third, with 102 marks, and J Spoaring lifth, with 98. Tho judge dec'ared that ho had great trouble in deciding the winnor of competition, and in criticising tho players' individual play, ho says:— •• H Pernio (" flyporion").—This playor set a very fair standard of a good and serviceable instrumentalist, but he wanted to pay more attention to tho marks of expression. His feature was the way he got his top notes. On tho whole 1)0 wwwry good, though not up to tho standard," Of J, Spearing (''The Thorn") he says: —" His opening wanted a pood deal moro character, and the accents wanted more attcntian. Tho expression marks should be moro observed. Tho tono was good, but ho was out of tirno occasionally. The theme was rather namby-mmbv, but had a fair executant, especially on tho triplelongueing, although inclined to emphasise tho wrong notes." In the E flat Bass sol), N.Brown, with 96 marks, "'id T, Smith, with 92, both of Waihi, finished fifth and sixth '•espeetively. Tho judgo's remarks regarding them aro as follows: - II N. In tho B flat Euphonium class, tho Waihi representative pUced'loo marks to his credit. The judge* doieribed him aa ''a player, who does not sufficiently obscrvo tiio nuances; of good romise.'but wants refinement."
