Waihi Borough Council.
At the usual fortnightly meeting of the Waihi Borough Council, held last evening, there were praaeut—Ofa Foster.Newth, Slevin, Donaldson,' Henderson, and Saunders.
A letter from tho Mayor stated that owing to pressure of business he was unable to attend the meeting. Or. Donaldson was voted to the ohair.
THH OAS SDJPPtY. H. Atkinson, on behalf of the Paeroa Gas Company, wrote asking if tHere was any prospect of the Council taking gas in bulk from the company if he furnished particulars. The company supplied Kirangahakfc, and tho pipes oral! be ex tended to vVaihi. He belived that gas supplied from l J aeroa would bo cheaper than if manufactured in the borough. The Engineer, in a minute, recommended that tne company's price bo asked for.
Or S Hinders niovod that the company be asked to submit a price. Or Henderson seconded. Or Postor moved as an amendment that tho letter be received. The Counoil had made up its mind long ago to municipalise the work, and it would uot do now to offer inducements to a private ootnpany. We should not barter away our rights to private persons, . Cr Slevin seoonded. The Counoil had deoided on what was undoubtedly the best course.
The chairman said it would do no good to put the company lo any bother in the. faoe of the former deoMon of the Council Cr Newth supported the amendment., Cr Saunders said that obtaining a price did not mean that the Council would bud itselt to take the supply from the company. If the Counoil oould supply gas at 8s and the company oharged 10s, so muoh the better for the borough; but if the com pany cou d supply, it for 10s, and the Council oost was 12s, the company should be patronised. The amendment was then put and carried. GOLD FROM RIVER The Ohineinnri County Counoil wrote asking for a refund of certain gold duties paid to the borough on gold won by the Ohinemuri River Syndicate, stating that as the tailings had been taken from the right hand bank of the river they were inside the County boundary and tne duty should go to the County Counoil.—The letter was received.
WA T EB FOB QLAD3TONB STHBET. Residents of Gladstone-street petitioned for a water supply. The Engineer said that at next meeting he would bring down a list of the streets which he thought wore particularly in want of che service. The letter was received, and consideration deferred pending the Engineer's report, ARTHUR BRITTAW, Arthur Brittain wrote • that he was curious to know why the order for tho mono-breaker had bnen given to Messrs E. Porter and Co, and why he was over* looked, The letter was received, Mr Brittain to be asked to seek the information from E. Porter and Co, and to be informed that the correspondence re the stone-breaker was now closed. WATER Frtß SLADOHTRR-HOtJSE. 8 Tanner wrote stating that he had re. ceivfd notioe from the Stock Inspector that he must improve (he water supply nt his slaughter-house, and asking that the Council supply him. It was agreed to furnish a supply at the rate of £2 per year.
MAIN ROAD MAINTENANCE The County Council made a r?6tnand for the sum of £4lB 18s 11, being the borough's proportion of the oost of main road maintenance for December, It was agreed that the amount be paid. GOtD DOTY Tho Treasuary notified piymnnt and the National Bank receipt of £1596, being gold duty for the month of Decembor. BOWENTOWN HEID3 M. J. Stewart, hon. secretary Katikati Domain Board, wroto asking : that the borough subsidy of 120 towards improvements to the Domain at Bowontown Heads bo paid, and stating that improvements had been effected. The Chairman stated that' the money had been paid. The work undertaken had been of an important and necessary nature. Or Henderson said that the well was faulty, It had not been covered except with a couple of stioka and a few ti-troe branches, and was a danger to ohildron. Cr. Slevin said that whon the work was completed the faults referred to would bo rectified,
The lottor was raooived. MISTAKING THE PEGS Mary T.T«iOm wrote stating that she had built on a borough road through having mistaken a peg, and asking the Counoil if k would reooniinend the Warden to alter tho oourso of the road so that she would not have to remove tho house. Or, Foster explained that the road was a blind ono, leading to nowhere, and was of little use.
It was deoided to inspeot the seolion.^ APPLICATION FOR WATBR
J. Bunny, manager of the Waihi Consols mine, wrote asking for a water supply. The Engineor said that tho main passed close to the mine, and recommendel that tho supply bo granted for 255. This was agreed to. NEW CONSTABLE The Police Commissioner, in reply to th" Council's application for inoreused police protection, wrote that an additional oonstable had been appointed. The Postal Department wrote that they were trouble to supply a third mal from Wnihi. The £SO per year extra would be expeiiee that the s°rvioe.warranted. The letter was reoeived,
9UPPI.Y OF 6TONB The manager of tho Waihi Grand Junoiion wrote that ho had authorised the contractors to got stone from the Council, the price to be paid by the contractors. On the motion of the ohairman, the letter was received, the attention of the company to be drawn to the Council's previous letter, in which it was made dear that the oompaby ouly would be dealt with,
MRGER MAIN WANTRD Residents of Waitcte Road oomplained of tho smallneas of tho wator maiu for any but domestic purposes, and asked for a larger one. The ongincer explained that the main in question was one that had been used for supplying the hospital, and was suitable for domestio purposes only, It was hot intended as a permanent main. Cr, Nowth said jt wae not fair, to tax ibeso people if they did not, get tho same service as other parts of the town. It was decided to consider this street with thoso to bo reported on by tho' Engineer.
