ANTI-SUGAR TAX AGITATION Prees Association.—Copyright. London, Jan. 31 A well attended conference was held in London to-day, under the auspices of the Cobden Club, in support of free trade, with special reference to the sugar convention and the sugar tax Delegates were present from numerous London nod provincial trades unions, cooperative societies, workmen's clubs, and progressive organisation. , Lord Welby, who presided, stated that the effect of the convention had been absolutely disastrous, without any return He added:" We have surrendered immense ; manufacturiitg advantages, involving a national loss of eight or nine millions por year, and :hs workman's familv has suffered a loss of at least a pound per .year. Sir Felix Schuster, vice president' of the Institute of Bunkers, declared that the' Convention was-an object leeson on what would happen if fiscal reforms become iaw. A resolution was unanimously carried demanding the denunciation of the convention and the renewal of the war tax on t»ugar.
