Fire in Haszard Street
Serious Blaze Averted A HTiis before hall-past thrco this afternoon »fire jbroke out in a small shed at the rear of Lockington and Fattison's furniture and produoe store. Within a few minutes after the alarm was given the brigade was on the spot, It took about three minutes to get the connections made. Monnwhilo thoro was a considerable blaze in the yard a few feet away from the door of the shed, ant? fire was burninp inside, a quantity of flax and a mattross or two, furnishing matorial for the blaze. By this time over two hundred people had assembled in the vicinity. After the hose had been playing a few minums the fire was extinguished. The hydrant was conneoted with one of the mains of tin new water supply, and a splendid head of water was obtained, The origin of the fire, it seems, was caused by a small boy lighting a cigarette and throwing the lighted maioh on to the ground where a large quantity of inflnmmable material was lying about. The fire was discovered almost immediately by Mr Lockington, who saw the smftli boy passing round tho back of tho premisos with a cigarette in his moutb, and a moment or twolaier he buw the blaze from the lighted flax. There was a high wind blowing, and ifit had not been for the prompt attendance of the brigade thorp would have boon a serious conflngrntion, as no water was available for a bucket brigade.
