MINING IN SUMATRA. '""■-Mr Bert Dunlop, who left Thames somo months ago to fill an important position in connection with mining in Sumatra, writeß to the Thames Star as follows:—Tho climate here is a littlo warm in tho middle of iho (lay, but cool at night, having always to uso a blaimot, Tho average rainfall is 272 inches per yoar, and novor drizzles, but comes down in bucketfuls generally about sunsot. Wo have a mino here which puts you in mind of Waihi, Last month, for forty bwl of stamps, our return was 112,500 sterling. All manual labour is dono by Malays and Chinese coolies, The carpenters, fitters, blacksmiths, and maßonsaro Chinese, There are about 4000 natives employod by tho company, the averago wage being 40 cents Hollands, equal to 8d English, per day, plus three feeds of rice and dry fish. The company provide every man a house of two rooms, verandah back aud front, also bathroom, kitcheu, electrio 1 ght etc., medical attendance free. The mino is supplied with power from a 2000 volt throe phaso alternating current system, tho generating station being Bituatod threo kilometres from the mine, and driven by water power, Tho rock drills, hoinle, pumps, stamp mills, and in fact all tho plant, is electrically operated,
