WAIHI V\ '.'ENDED MINE Op tho luui- s-iuplos of ore taken by two of tho directors of tho Waihi Extended inino to Auckland for assay last wook, two of them were obtained from tho vioinity of tho footwall in tho fnco of tho roof that had been advanced a few feet into the Extended properly, Another was taken from tho hanging wall of tho rcof that is being advancod into tho Grand Junction properly ; and another, which coruplotcs the number of samples assayed, from a two inch loader in tho north west cross out. The result as published in our paper yostorday, and in the Auckland papers of the same date, gavo tho impression that No, 2 sample, which contained only trncos of gold and silver, had couio from tho footwnll of the big roof, whereas it was obtained from a two-inch Under in another part of tho workings altogether, It appeared strangely inconsistent that only traces of gold and Bilvcr wero to bo found in a samplo 'akon from a reef which in othor samples gave such good assay values, Mr Burns, of tho Bank of New Zealand, who was ontrustod with the samples referred to, has furnished these particular? :—No 1 sample relumed gold 15ihvt9., silver, loz 15 dwls, total value per ton £3 3s Gd; No 2 samplo (ta« kon from a quartz seam in the north west cross-cut) traces of gold and silver; No 3 sample gavo gold lfidwts. Bgrs, silver 2oz Sdwts, valuo per ton £3 9s Hid, It will thus be scon that No 1 and No 3 samples, taken from tho face in tho drive on tho rocf tabout six feot wide) in tho diroclion oi the Extended ground, has an average valuo of £'3 6* (3,1. No, 4 samplo was takon lrom the rocf in the (aco being advancod towards the Grand Junction Company's workings. This returned gold 9 dwts 19 grs, and silver loz lOdwts, value per ton .£223 2d, The results aro highly satisfactory,'and oven better than was Erst thought, showing as it docs that the Wnihi Extended Company possess a roef which for about six feet is highly payable. Tliero is also every indication that the reef as it goes down will givo higher values, In our opinion tho future of the raino is absolutely assured, and will becomo n very valuable properly. Tin? assurance is based on tho fact that tho extension of tho largo and valuablo roof sytteia of the Waihi mine, which is acknowledged lo rank with tho greatest ininos of the world, has its existence in tho Extomlod ground,
