THE WAIHI GRAND JUNCTION

VISIT TO THE MINE

IMPORTANT UNDERGROUND

WORKINGS

To-day out rcprcsontativo visited tho Waihi Grand Junction Gold Company's mine, and in company with Mt Morgnm as'guido, (iiul Mi' Colin Frasor, mining scientist, explored tho wholo of the under ground workings of the mino. The outcomo of tho visit was tho accumulation of interesting noteß louring o.i tho past mid present development of this valuable proporty. It is only wlion ono actually sees for oneself, and things are oxplained as ono soes, that ouo can got mi nduqaato understanding of what tho future of tho Grand Junction rainois likoly to bo. At tho !if] foot lovel the drive was travorsod up to a point whero ft divorgenco of tho main Martha lodo passes underfoot. Travor; > ing tlio divergence of llio lodo (No. 2 lodo) for about 130 feet, tho first portion of which is low r ado oro, wo camo to tho No. 2 shaft. Up to this point wo had travorsod tho main Martha roof for close on 400 fsot, the lodo varying iu thickness from 23 feet to 3 leet 3 inches, Jio assay values being from 17s 9d up to £4 14s Cd. From No 2 shaft we procoeded right to the face, a distance of 590 ft, keep* ing tho lodo in viow tlio whole way excopt whero it occasionally passed underfoot. In tho present face tho reef is over 2 feet in wid'li, and about 45 foot distant from tho Extondcd boundary, Between tho No. 2 shaft and tho faco 7 winzes have been sunk on tho reef, to depths varying from 25 feet to 30 foet. Caro.'.il assays lmvo been mado of tho oro at frequent intervals along tho wholocourso of tho reef in tho lovel and of the oro iu tho winzes, Up to 313 feet tho assay value ol the oro, which was published in tho company's report, vatios from 17s up to £lolos, the averasjo assay in tho level being £4 13s 4d per ton, whilo tho avorago valuo of iho oro in tho winzes is £s4s6d per ton, showing a marked improvement in valuo of oro at a lowei' depth, Wherever tho small extent of lode existing above tho lovel has been tested by nsos tho oro values dio away, but in tlio winzes below tho lovel, as already stated, tho oro values aro most satisfactory. Leaving tho 500 ft level wo descended to tlw 636 ft level. There wo traversed a drivo 340 ft in length, At this point furchor progress has boon suspended pending the completion at tins lovel ot the installation of tho pump, which ilia ox* puptod will be an accomplished fact within tha next fotir weoks. This crosscut was put in to intersect tho reef in tho No. 3 winzo in tho level immodiatoly above at a distance of 400 feet, but as tho faco of tho cross cut had overy appearanco of the reef being met with at any moment, and owing to fear of an inrush of water should the reef be intersected, it was deeinod advisable to stop driving till tho pump was installed. WAIHI EXTENDED MILE There seems to bo iittlo doubt that tho branch of tho main Martha lodo which has boon travereod in tho Waihi Grand Junction mino for over 600 foot continues on into tho Waihi Extended mine. If this is so, and as we have already stated, tliore can bo no doubt that it in, tho Extended possess a vory valuable lodo, Up to a certain point iu Iho Grand Junction mino the averago valuo of tho ore in tho level is £4l3s 4d por too, whilo tho ore in tho winzes, approximately 28 foet deoper, is worth £5 4s 6d. Another important factor is tho existcnco of tho great Waihi Company's reef system below the present level, proved by tho Grand June* tion Company, in their boring operations, by which they pierced the lode, showing its width to bo 119 feet, The avorago value of tho coros obtained from this colossal reef was £8 Is Bd. There is n? doubt that the Extended mino has a great future beforo it,
