Notes from Katikati
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Messrs Bond Bads, and Judd's new wlmrf baa been finished under tho ablo suporintendonco of Mr, W. Judd; and laid with an iron tramway down to tho end of tho toe, Tho wharf i 9 closo oil Olio thousand foot long; and the tramway is so eucccasfuMy engineered that the centre of gravity carries tho trucks, timber ladon, at a good speed down the cadre longlli from tho timber yard. Just at presont thorn avo tlireo scows about tho wlmrf getting cargoes (or tlio Auckland markets. Tho main tramway from tho mill to tho yard at Mr Digglcman's is being pushed on with all speed, tinder tlio same supervision, and is a solidly constructed : work. Tho speed attained on some parts of this lino is ovor twenty miles en hour, The mill is a tine building, with up-to-date machinery, capable of cutting over fifteen thonsand'fcot of timber daily. Altogether the works employ perhaps over forty hands at present, and are certainly one of the loremost institutions in the county for the employment of surplus labour, I hear that two farms liore liavo changed hands—Athcnrco and Josinond—Captain H. Stewart having sold tlio former at a good figure, and Mr Wm. Tutbill bought tho latior, I hear that Captain and Mrs Stewart, and Mr Id. J, Stewart, arc leaving for England early next month. Mr M, J. Stewart will be a direct loss lo tho district, For years he lias fostered the lloatl Board's revenue, until now it stands at a respectable amount, He it was who hatched tho Katikati Dairy Company into existence, and to-day it is a thriving and financially sound con'eorn, Tho Katikati Heads Re iorvo was taken in hand by him, and is slowly boing rescued from chaos, His nnmo is associated with many other good works, Ho supported—in fact I think, launched—tho " ratine; on unimproved values," which passed tho ratepayers somo yoai's ago throughout tho entire county, and is extonding ils benevolent ramifications to the uttermost part of the Southern Hemisphere. Had he been returned to the House of Representatives for Ohinomuri fivo years ago, ho would have given a better account of hij" steward ehip" tlwn politicians who liavo rob led the Seddoniau platform to and fro, through political night. I wish him o very success in his new field of labours,
