SAILING TO TONGA

IN A THIRTY-SIX FOOTER. A very small craft cleared at Auckland one morning last week, and sailed on a thouasnd mile sail io Tonga. She is the Ha’abai Veu, and is similar in type to about & dozen other boat® that Mr Charles Bailey, jun., her builder, has turned out for owners in that group of the Pacific. They are used in the inter-island trade, and are admirably fitted for the work. The Ha’abai Veu is 36 feet in length, 11 feet beam and draws 5 feet. She has a marked sheer, and looks what she is, an excellent sea boat. She is cutter rigged, and will carry about eight or nine tons of cargo. The boat has been built to the order of Mr S, Mnnu, of Haapai. Captain Rodger, who recently navigated the trawler James Cosgrove out from the Old Country, is going in charge, and he has with him as mat© Mr S. Adams, who was also one of the James Cosgrove’s crew, and Mr Clifford Bailey (son of the builder), who ;'s going a® deck hand. It is expected that the run to the islands will take about ten days.* Mr Bailey has received an order from the Tongan Government for a cutter somewhat larger than the Ha’abai Yen.
