A captain in the Coldstream ‘ Guards, who became a Lieutenant-Colonel in W rangel’s army, tells a terrible story of the retreat of 'bis corps.- In the thick of the filial fighting, be lost 75 per. cent. oE bis effectives in constant rearguard actions. The Bolsheviks' success was due to the overwhelming strength of their cavalry, which broke through the line®. The retreat was conducted in heavy snow falls and bitter frost, through which Wrangel'a forces struggled without blankets and practically foodless. A pitiful sight was dying soldiers leaning on their rifles. waiting for the snow to swallow them and form a winding sheet.' Dead horses everywhere marked the, retreat.
