ALMOST BURIED ALIVE

The death has occurred of Sergeant diaries Whitcroft, of West Bromwich, who had served in the Army for 30 years. He at- the relief of Lucknow. During his Indian service Whitcroft contracted cholera, was certified dead, and placed in a coffin, which was screwed down and left ready tor burial.

Recovering consciousness and finding himself boxed up, Whitcroft kicked .the coffin 1 lid vigorously, and the noise being heard by other soldiers, he was released. It is stated that it was a grievance of Whitcraft’s that the War Office deducted 16s from hia pay for the coffin, and the money was never refunded
