The American fishing schooner Esperanto beat the Canadian schooner Delawanna in the first of three races for the international championship of the North Atlantic over a forty-mile course.. The Esperanto finished tw<fb miles ahead. EXCITING CONTESTS. HALIFAX (Nova Scotia), Oct. 30. 'lnterest in the races between tbe Esperanto and the Delawanna has taken on an. atmosphere similar to the America Cup races. The Delawanna recently won the sailing championship of the Lunenburg (Nova Scotia) fishing fleet. She was immediately challenged by tbe Esperanto, the. champion of the Gloucester (Massachusetts) fishing fleet. Each craft was manned by twenty-five fishing skippers. Fisher folk from as far north as Labrador Journeyed to Halifax t<3 see the contest. Betting in coastal cities was kee-ner than in the Shamrock-Reso-lute race. The . winner of two out of three races gets the cup and purse.
