DEMAND FOR HORSES
BIG PRICES BEING PAID. It was thought that with the big development of the motor car there would be a lessening demand for horses. Judging by recent sales, horses are in greater demand than ‘ever, and prices for good animals have reached a height never hitherto attained. At Hawera last week unbroken draughts ran from £4O upwards, whilst a eeven-year-old gelding brought ,£69. There was also a very successful sale at Marten on Saturday last. It was held under the auspices of the Farmers’ Co-operative Distributing Company, and buyers were present from all the surrounding districts. There was a good, keen demand for all classes of good draughts, while spring carters and hacks sold well up to late rates. A 6yr draught mare bred /by and sold on account of Mr Hugh Stewart, Bridle Track, topped the market at .£SB 10s. Prices w'ere: Unbroken, horses: 3yr draught filly ,£3B 10s, 4yr draught gelding J34 10s, 6yr ditto .£25, 5, 6, to Syr food sound draught mares £37 to .£4O, o. geldings =B3B to .£56, aged mares and geldings to ,£33, syr spring cart geldings iJ2B 10s, aged do. mares and geldings to £l7, hacks to .£l4 10s, Shetland pony, 3yrs, .£l4 ss.
