TWO GUARDS PUNISHED. (Per United Presto Association.) ASHBURTON, Oct. 29. Following sensational arrest a week ago of two guards, Charles Alexander Travis and John George Murray, from whose houses express loads of allegedly stolen goods were removed after a search, a aeries of charges were brought against each to-day before Mr Mosley, S.M. Travis was charged with theft from the Railway Department of a parcel of boots, a quantity of camisoles, four overcoats, a box of raisins, a parcel of sweaters, a sack of sugar, a box of tea, two tennis racquets, and boxes of paints, the total value being about £4B 12s. Murray was charged with the theft of a box of Jeye’s fluid, a quantity of drapery, clothing samples, ladies’ clothing, a box of tea, a roll of winceyette, two bags of sugar, a box of condensed milk, the total value being .£6O 12s. They were charged conjointly with the theft of a box of butter, men’s clothing, a roll of tweed, a piece of flannel, two pounds of wool, nine tins of biscuits, and a quantity of clothing, valued at .£SO 17s. The dates for the alleged thefts ranged back for the last twelve months. The accused pleaded guilty, and were dealt with summarily on all charges, except Murray, who pleaded not guilty to the theft of the Jeye’s fluid. The accused were sentenced to twelve months’ hard labour each on the single charges, and on varying terms on the other charges, the sentences to run concurrently.
