WOMEN COMBINE
HIGH COST OF LIVING. CO-OPERATIVE BUYING PROPOSED. BRISBANE. Oct. 22. To-day about twenty women—members of the South Brisbane Housewives’ Association—waited on the Premier, Mr Theodore, and discussed means of dealing with the high cost of living, Mr Theodore was asked if he could assist them in their efforts to carry on cooperative buying, and possibly to establish a co-operative store. They stated that for some time they had been making arrangements with local tradesmen under which rebates were obtained on the cost of certain commodities, chiefly groceries. Stress was laid on .ue heavy expenses of expectant mothers, and also on the difficulties of rearing children. The Premier, in reply, said lie would ■give the requests consideration. He referred to the increasing cost of living in all countries, mentioning some articles that had increased 200 per cent during the last eight years. He predicted that the establishment of a store would not altogether rest on conditions which existed four years ago, but considered the suggestion a practicable idea. The possibility of wholesale firms declining to supply goods in the event of the store being estabished was brought forward and Mr Theodore said the Government woud see that they were able to secure supplies at a reasonable price.
