BRILLIANT BATTING

ENGLISH COUNTY MATCHES,

SOME GREAT SCORING,

Received August 28, 9.50 a.m. LONDON, August 26. ■ The fine weather and good wickets resulted in heavy scoring in the county cricket matches. Surrey, playing against, North Ants, declared at 619 for five vickc-ts. Peach scored 200 (unfinished), Ducat 149, Fender 113 (unfinished). In forty minutes Sandham made 92. North Ants made 303. Hampshire, playing against Warwick, declared at 616 for seven wickets: Mead 102 (unfinished), Brown 151, and Barrett 148. Playing against Middlesex, Woolley made 93, and Fender reached the century in 35 minutes, beating Jessop’s record of 49 minutes made in 1897, and his score included five 6’s and sixteen 4’s. Fender gave only two chances, his driving being wonderful. Playing against Kent, in the second innings Hendrcn scored 84 in 43 minutes, including one 6 and thirteen 4’s by terrific hitting. Nothing has been settled as regards the amateur team Zealand, but efforts are being made to do so. There is a strong dt-sire to send a team ;f possible, ns the team for Australia will bo unable to visit New Zealand. The Marylebone Club is quite in favour of the scheme.
