OUR ROADS.
To the Editor. Sir, —Tho question of roads is becoming a very important one, and the question of future policy in that respect is doubtless exercising the grinds of our Dorough and County Councillors at present. Tho old gravel road will soon bo a tiling of tho past wherever there is heavy motor traffic. What is the now road to be? My reason for writing is this:—The present tendency is for tar-sealed roads, and there is no doubt’tliat they are good when they are properly laid down. But if tarscaling is going to bo adopted on a large scale whore is tho tar to come from p Ope consideration is the coal shortage. Increasing cost of coal will make tlie price of gas rise, and therebv tend to decrease consumption, whereas to supply the demand for tar we. would of necessity look to a greater consumption of gas. Another and more important consideration is the near advent of electricity, which, though it may not materially decrease the demand for gas, will certainly tend to prevent an increase. Therefore, I say, that, in framing a policy, the question of tar supplies is a very important one, and should he given serious consideration by those in whoso hands the decision rests. If tar-scaling is to he carried out on an extensive scale a large supply will lie required, not ony for the initial work but also for maintenance. Thanking you for your valuable space.—l am, etc., PROGRESS.
