25 MILLIONS.
THIS YEAR’S BORROWING. (By Telegraph—Special to “Herald”). WELLINGTON, August 26. Some indication of the extent of the Government's borrowing requirements for the year was given to a deputation by the Minister of Finance, who remarked that he could not meet all the financial demands made on him. He believed ho was not far out in stating that he had been asked by local bodies and others to provide a hundred millions. If the Government was able to provide twentyfive millions—ten millions of which were to repay loans falling due at the end of the year —it would be doing quite well. They hoped to be able to do that. He did not wish to see development retarded, but at the back of his mind all the time was the thought that neither the Government nor the local bodies were getting full value for the money expend ed. The matter would not be remedied till they had a larger population ' and more men ready to undertake the neces* aary work.
