By ‘‘ACHILLES.” Nominations for tire Wanganui spring meeting close on Monday at 8 p.m. Messrs W. A. and T. Duncan have leased their horses to F, Tilley, and they will in future run in his name.

The acceptances for the Marton Jockey Club’s spring meeting, to be held on Wednesday next, are excellent, and some good racing should be witnessed. The tracks are said to be in splendid order, and if the weather is favourable should be better than ever on the day. The annual report of the committee of the Manawatu Racing Club states that the amount given in stakes during the past year for five days’ racing was £12,175. The balance-sheet shows a net profit of £2294 4s. The ordinary taxation paid to the Government amounted to £12,736, and the club also had to pay income tax for four years, amounting to £3775 10s 3d, making a total of £16,512 for the year.

K. Bracken could have ridden Mount Frisco at Randwick when he won recently, but was so little impressed b? the way that horse ran at Roeehiil when he was on him the previous week that ha chose Pretty Baby in preference. This merely further demonstrates that jockeys, like most other people cannot gauge how much improvement is possible in a horse in a rew Jays.

It baa been suggested that if book makers are entirely banned over here, Australian bookmakers may be tempted to do businesss on the Dominion’s principal events. It is doubtful, however, as only a very small section of racing men over there take a betting interest in New Zealand races, and though a lot of money might come from over here for horses that had really good chances there would be insufficient for the others to make the proposition an attractive one to many layers. The. following is from the Melbourne Leader: “The V.A.T.C. officials gave a good tip for the Australian Hurdle Race when they issued heart-shaped trainers’ tickets, to which were attached silver ribbons. Another coincidence was that the ticket issued to D. JPrice, trainer of Silver Heart, was No. 11, the number carried in the race by the winner. Furthermore, at the entrance gate Price’s ticket was clipped so as to Leave it No. 1.”

Latest American papers confirm the correctness of Man-o’-llar’s 2.14 1-5 for eleven furlongs in the Belmont Stakes, and the statement that an offer of 260,000 dol. (£62,000 at pre-war rates’) was refused for him. As Man-o’-War carried 9.0, his time in the Belmont Stakes was phenomenal. Subsequent to his record-breaking performance, Man o’-War was engaged in the Stuyvesant Handicap, one mile, at Jamaica (.New York). It was worth £770 to the winner, but though Man-o’-War had 9.9 he frightened everything out of it except Yellow Hand (7.5), and, starting at 100 to 1 on, he beat the latter as" ho liked by eight lengths. After Man-o’-War won the Belmont Stakes hi.; breeder, Major August Belmont, who was present, delivered himself as follows; “I will not concede that Man c’-War Is the best horse I have ever seen. The manner iu which he ranthe speed displayed, and the amount of reserve force he had at the close of the race was amazing. He looked as though he could have gone on for two miles, and he has now done enough to convince me that he is the best horse we have had in this country.’
