Details of the Marathon show that the runners started ten deep, circled the course twice, and then out on the road in pitiless rain. They were cheered aa they passed through the villages. Infantry, and cavalry were posted at every twenty-five yards to prevent interference. Gitsham (South Africa), with Kolehmainen (Finland) close up, led for the earlier stages. A nasty hill tested the runners at thirteen kilometres, where the lead was unchanged. At fifteen kilometres the position was: Gitsham, Kolehmainen, Broos (Belgium), Blase (Italy), with the others tailed out of sight. The pace was great. Gitsham and Kolehmainen drew away and appeared to have the race in hand. At twenty kilometres they were running shoulder to shoulder with Broos two hundred and Blase four hundred metres behind. Gitsham commenced to fall back seven kilometres from home. Loosman meanwhile gained rapidly, but failed to overhaul Kolehmainen, who entered the Stadium with a good lead, breaking the tajje thirty seconds ahead. The winner was draped with the Finnish flag crowned with laurel. He toured the Stadium and was cheered by twenty thousand spectators. Broos (Belgium) was fourth, followed by Damkowsky (Finland), Sofas (Denmark), Le Roy (America), Hansen (Denmark), and Tollgren (Finland).
