BOWLING.
N.Z. TEAM FOR ENGLAND, (Per United Press Association..) CHRISTCHURCH, August 24. An invitation from the English Bowling Association has been received by Mr F. Barnett for representative rinks of New Zealand bowlers to visit the British Isles next year, arriving in time to take part in the English June tournament. Bowlers desirous of being included in the ream must apply to the secretary of the New Zealand Bowling Association, Christchurch, within the next fortnight, 'as the team will be selected at the next Council meeting in Wellington, towards the end of next month. The team will be the first representative of the whole Dominion to visit Britain.
GONYILLB CLUB. The annual general meeting of the above Club was held in the Club’s pavilion last evening, when there was a large attendance, the Preisdent (Mr F. Bourne) occupying the chair. NEW MEMBERS. The following new members were elected: Messrs Jago, E. Douglas, A. E. Blundell, R. N. Peatti, A. H. Northover, S. C. Simonds, and H. A. Spencer. ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report stated that the ■green was maintained in perfect condition last season. The membership was the highest reached in the history of the Club, being 104, including honorary members. On several Saturdays it was necessary to provide for nine rinks to accommodate the players, and it is evident that the time is at hand when additional rinks must be provided on the spare ground available. The financial position of the Club has been improved considerably as a result of the increase in membership, there being a surplus on the season’s working of £2 5s Id, as against a deficit for the previous year of £52 3s 2d. The usual inter-club fixtures were played with the following results: Fountain Banner, 3 wins; Senior Shield, 2 wins; Junior Shield, 2 wins. Keen interest was shown in the Club’s own competitions, the final results being:—Rinks: W. D. Ayson, G. Aitken, L. E, Tabart, W. S. Corby (sk). Pairs; C. Bowater and C. Bromley (sk.). Championship Singles; W. S. Corby. Junior Championship Singles: H. P. Lewis. Junior Pairs; J. McKenzie and T. T. Bell (sk.). Bignell Ferns; W. H. Redwood, L. E. Tabart, N. P. Svenson, H. Rice (sk.). Tabart, Stars: H. P. Lewis and J. Steel (sk.). Tbe Keesing Cup was wrested from the Westbourne Club by a team comprising W. H. Redwood, W. S. Corby, A. E. Bragg and H. A. Flower (sk.), who were successful in withstanding three challenges. In the one game played the Club was unsuccessful in retaining the Junior Bannerette. Five rinks from the Club competed in tbe Centre Christmas Tournament, but none gained section honours. A rink composed of W. S. Corby, C. Moutray, A. E. Bragg, and H. A. Flower (sk.) were the winners of the last try match in the Tournament. In the Centre Pairs Tournament second place honours were obtained for the Club by L. E. Tabart and J. Steel (sk.), who were defeated in tbe final game by a small in * gin. At tbe Taranaki Tournament tbe rink comprising S. J. McKee, F. Bourne, A. E. Bragg, and H. A. Flower (sk.) were tbe winners of their section, and reached the third round in the semi-finals. H. A. Flower represented the Club in the Centre Singles Tournament, and was defeated by the St. John’s Club competitor in the final game. Trophies have been presented by the President for Full Rink Competitions, by L. E. Tabart for Challenge Pairs, and by H. A. Flower for Junior Singles Championship. The President congratulated members on the very satisfactory position disclosed by the report, which was adopted. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The following officers were elected for the ensuing season;— President, Mr H. A. Flower; vice-president, Mr C. Cresswell; secretary, Mr N. Svenson; treasurer, Mr F. Bourne; committee; Messrs C. Moutray, A. Bragg, W. S. Corby, C. Bowater, F. Symes W. E. Brown, L. Tabart, W. Gilbsrd, and C. Bromley; selection committee: Messrs Cresswell, Bell, and Bromley; delegates to Centre: Messrs Flower and n.. E. Bragg; green supervisor, Mr H. A. Flower. GENERAL BUSINESS. A motion expressing the warmest appreciation of Mr H. Rice’s valuable services during the two years he acted as secretary was carried unanimously, and it was resolved that a copy of the resolution should be forwarded to him, and that it be recorded in the minutes. It was decided that the subscription be raised to £3 15s, reducible to £3 10s, if paid before December 1. A letter was received from the Waipukurau Club asking for assistance towards supplying the T.B. patients at Waipukurau Camp (who have been provided with a green) with bowls. A subscription was taken up in the room, and the sum of £4 collected with which to purchase a set of bowls. It was resolved that tbe Championship Singles competition in future be played on the two-life system; after the first round winners to play winners and losers to meet losers, those with two wins to drop ont of the competition. Some discussion took place as to full rink games on off Saturdays, the feeling of the meeting being in favour of the abolition of the club full rink competition, and in lieu thereof that teams be picked and published a few days before any off Saturday. A sub-committee was finally appointed to consider the advisability of altering the club’s competition rules. A letter was read from Mr W. T. Benefield regretting his inability to attend the meeting, and intimating that he would donate a pair of silver-mount-ed bowls to be competed for by juniors.— It was decided to accept Mr Benefield’s offer with thanks. It was reported that arrangements in connection with the social to be held on the 31st were well in hand, and tbe function was expected to prove a big success. WESTBOURNE CLUB. The annual meeting of the above club was held on Monday at the Castlecliff Hall. There was a large attendance of members, Mr T, H, Nixon being in the chair. The report and balance-sheet were
read, showing that the club bad bad a most successful year. Officers.—The following officers were elected tor the ensuing season;— President, Mr J.- H. Passmore; vice-presi-dent. Mr G. Marsden; secretary, Mr J. Og-ilvie; treasurer, Mr J. H. Passmore; committee, Messrs S. Jarrett, T. H. Nixon, T. Copeland, T. Whitten, C. Williams, H. Dobson, J. Beadle, E. O’Hara, and W. Hill; delegates to Centre, Messrs T. Nixon and Ash well; selection committee, Messrs S. Jarrett, J, Ogilvie, an.i J. H. Passmore. Caretaker.—Mr Grubb was appointed caretaker for the club. During the past season the club visited Patea, Waverley, and Marton, and had good wins. Six inter-club games were played with various clubs, the honours being even. The club’s thanks were extended to Mr H. H. Ficwer for the junior trophy, also to Messrs Bid'lake and Barron for trophies to be played for this year . General discussions followed, and various resolutions were carried regarding the working cf the club and encouraging young players. The past ytars singles competition was won by Mr A. Dobson, and the j nior singles by M r A. Firmin. The other conqeCtious were not finished. A vote i.'f thanks to the chair concluded a sutcessful meeting.
