ACTION FOR LIBEL
OUTCOME OF GENERAL ELECTIONS (Per United Press Association.) # WELLINGTON, August 23. ■ Party politics during the late general elections and the actions of a county council's official and criticism of the residents thereon were a matter before the Supreme Court to-day in an action for libel by Robert Charles Dick, assistant road, inspector to the Hutt County Council, against James Judge and 13 other residents of the district, the damages claimed being .£2OOO. It was alh’gtd that dolt iQ’.i ts sent a letter or petition to the County Council containing the following words: —“That during the recent election, during tours on which he was supposed to be engaged iu the Council’s work, he was actively employed in canvassing for the Bed Fed and disloyal organisations’ candidates for the Otaki and Hutt electorates.’’ One of the grounds of defence was that the petition was a privileged communication, vritten and published without malice. The case is proceeding.
