MESOPOTAMIA
THE SITUATION SERIOUS ATTACKS ON BRITISH FORCES. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. Received August 23, 9.15 a.m. DELHI, August 20. The situation in Mesopotamia is undoubtedly serious, but there is no need for excessive alarm. The attacks on our forces at Hillah and the Euphrates on Wednesday night were pot. pressed home. Our detachments at Sa.mawe and Kufa, though isolated, are in satisfactory positions and in good spirits. We have withdrawn from Pah to Ra.madi, but the' line is held by local levies under British officers. The position there is satisfactory. Though reailway communication between Bagdad and Feluja has been cut north of Bagdad the position is satisfactory. Tribesmen are massing at Baquaba, where we hold Marshall’s bridge, by which the railway crosses the Diala. It will be some time before communication with Persia is restored. There is some unrest in the Kirkeek division, hut elsewhere all is quiet.
