Throe or four Wanganui-owned horses were taken north this morning to fulfil their engagements at the North Taranaki Hunt meeting. Amongst those which left were Glen Paul and Tirana. Captain Black, Gay Lady and Warriweowill ho taken through to New Plymouth on Tuesday. A big team of horses owned by Mr vV. R. Kemball have arrived here to finish off their training for the Martorr and Wanganui meetings, and as a consequence the track work is of a more interesting nature than usual. This morning there were several good gallops, the best being a spin over five furlongs by Rekanui, who beat Admyra comfortably in 1.34. Hymesf.ra proved too fast for Catalana in a four furlong spin, tire former taking 504. Tire son of Hymettus looks very well, hut the Catmint filly will improve with a few gallops. Restful, Rebuff and Trespass hit out nicely in a mile gallop, there being little between them at the finish, all moving very freely. Weldon© went a round at half pace, and Zola and Rose Queen covered a mile together at three-quarter, both moving very freely. Warriwe© shaped better than Mill o’ Gowrie in a six furlong spin, his time being 1.18. Bon otter sprinted over four furlongs by herself in good style in 50£. Captain Black and Gladful went a round over the big fences together,' both pimping well, the former shaping better than Iris companion at tier double, Gla-dful went on for another round by himself. Speaking at a meeting in Feilding Mr J. J. Bryce, tho well-known owner of hunters, including that great jumper, Twilight, said that racing clubs were riot improving the breed of horses. They were encouraging the breeding of r.olo ponies—and poor ones at that. They were only encouraging the breeding" of half mile sprinters. Now, if they insisted on encouraging tho breeding" of hunters they would ho doing something to relieve themselves of the taunt. Tlie hunter had to carry his 12 and 16 stone over rough country, jumping all the time. He must bo a good strong animal. Good horses were getting fewer and. fewer in number, partly owing to the motor car. For months lie had been looking for a lady s hack to purchase on behalf of a friend. He could not ffind a decent in© in trie country. They were not being bred.
Great difficulty is still being experienced by New 'Zealanders in England In obtaining passages for the return trip to the Dominion. Advices received last week are to the effect that some of the travellers are glad to book by steamers that sail direct from British ports to Sydney, as this is the more speedy way of getting homo. The -Shaw, Savill and Albion Company, it is stated, has notified Auckland clients that all its vessels bound for New Zealand are booked up to tho end of November. The following is taken from an Australian exchange as to how to icmove the wood borer; Put 2oz. copper sulphate (or bluestone) and 12oz water into an earthen jar, and then add very slowly loz. sulphuric acid. Do not pour the water into the acid, or yon will have an accident; pour the acid into the water; stir it with a wooden stick until all solution has taken place Saturate the wood with it, and it will destroy the borers. More than one application may be necessary to make the mixture penetrate the wood. Do not let the mixture get on the oilcloth, or it will discolour it.
