BRIDE TURNED AWAY
“TOO DIAPHANOUS DRESS.” NEW YORK, -Tune 12. Feminine circles in New Orleans are stirred at the refusal of Father Antoine, rector of St. Louis Cathedral, to marry a wealthy Italian woman, who came to the cathedral wearing a wedding gown which he considered too diaphanous. The incident is a direct result of the recent order by the Archbishop of tho diocese that an immodest dress should not be tolerated in Church. Everything was ready for yesterday’s wedding. The bridegroom was in the chancel and the organist was playing softlv when the bride entered the church on her father’s arm. Suddenly n shaft of light revealed the diaphanous texture of her gown, which father Antoine described as “nothing more than a piece of gauze above the waistline.” The reverend father shuddered visibly. “It was too much for me,” he said. “I ordered the sexton to put out the lights so that her shame could not be seen by all and in tho cinrkness lot her leave "the church to put on another gown in which she was wed at a Inter hour. She wanted to bring her marriage down to debauchery and disgrace. Her experience is a warning to all Catholic women.” Father Roth. of St. Theresa’s Church, has posted the following notice entrance to his church: “Women ear low-nocked dresses or sleeves eo x.icrt ns to uncover the elbows or otherwise do not wear sufficient clothing rr.av not enter this church. Won’v-'a clothes that reveal the form are barred.”
