TECHNICAL COLLEGE
MONTHLY MEETING. • The monthly meeting of the Technical College Committee took place on Monday evening, those present being Messrs C. Palmer Brown (chair), W. Bruce, S. B. Earles, W. A. Grace, W. M. Luxford, A ( . E. Maxwell, G. R. Simpson. Apologies were reeevied from Messrs E. W. Gohns, J. Patterson, J. G. Richardson, and D. McGregor. Agricultural Science.—ln. reference to the appointment of an Agricultural Science Instructor, it was resolved to recommend that Mr Jas. Grant be appointed a full-time instructor on the staff on the conditions forwarded to the Board. Hostel Site.—lt was decided to inform the Board that the Committee considered that the girls’ hostel site purchased from Technical College funds, should be held for the purposes of the Technical College and any portion resumed for primary school needs should be paid for at its value at the time of resumption. Manual Training Centre. —In connection with the' proposals for the extension of the College buildings, it was decided to support the proposed claim for a grant for a separate manual training centre. Boys’ Hostel Site.—lt was decided to approach the Borough Council for a boys’ hostel site of six acres in Purnell Street and to point out that unless a suitable site could be found soon the Government grant for a building might be lost to Wanganui. A letter from the Education Department stated that the Government was waiting for proposals in regard to a site and plans of the proposed buildings. Term Holidays.—lt was decided to recommend the Board to grant a small addition te tile term holidays as a mark of appreciation of the splendid work of the pupils and staff in raising funds for the proposed Memorial Hall. Technical Conference. - The Board was recommended to give the chairman and the director authority to represent the College at the Technical Schools’ Conference to be held in Wellington in September. Action Approved.—The director’s action in allowing instructors to go to the Girls’ College was approved. Board of Control. —A letter from the late chairman of the Education Board complaining of the Committee’s discourtesy in its application to the Council of Education for the establishment of a separate Board of Managers was discussed. It was pointed out that the Board last year definitely refused a similar request and further that it was understood the Council of Education would hand the application to the Board for reply. It was forwarded in duplicate to allow this to be do., a readily. It was resolved to inform the Board that no discourtesy was intended and to ask again that the Education Board advise the Minister of Education to constitute a special Board of Managers locally elected to administer the Technical College. Mr Brov/n, Mr Luxford and Mr Simpson were appointed a deputation to press this' resolution upon the Board. Memorial Hall.—lt was resolved to appeal to the citizens for assistance in raising funds for the Memorial Hall, and Messrs Richardson, Patterson, McGregor, Earles and the chairman were appointed a subcommittee for this purpose.
