REPRESENTATIVE AND CUP MATCHES. RUGBY UNION’S FIRM STAND. A special meeting of the Management Committee of the Wanganui Kugby Union, was held last evening, there being present; Messrs E. O’Meara (in the chair), G. Spriggens, P. Wilson, J. McLean, F. Meuli, F. Haywood, G. Hurst, A. Takarangi, G. Parsons, F. Spriggens and the secretary. The secretary explained that the meeting had been called at the instance ot the selectors, in -view of the Taihape players chosen unavailable for the Wanganui-Manawatr rep. match next Saturday on account of their Sub-Union deciding to go on with local cup matches. Telephonic communication to the above effect reached one of the selectors on Tuesday afternoon, • and early yesterday the following telegram was sent, to the Taihape Sub-Union: ‘‘Essential Batley, Cowie, Murphy and McAuliffe play for Wanganui represen* tatives cu Saturday ( at Palmerston North. Committee meeting this afternoon to consider reply.” This drey the following reply; “Must continue cup competition Saturday. Regret impossible to send players to Palmerston.’ This wire- had been confirmed by a leter received later, to the effect that at the Sub-Union meeting on Monday night fine delegates decided that the cup fixtures should be continued this week-end. The Management Committee discussed the matter at length, members considering that the Taihape Sub Union was defying the parent body, as their officials were informed definitely last Saturday that their players selected must play for Wanganui against Mana* watu. The Metropolitan Union matches must come before purely local fixtures, and this view had been pointed out to them previously. Members also considered it imperative that the best team should bo in action against Manawatu, as this would bo the only occasion the team as a whole would be working together prior to the first match of the tonr .at Wellington on 2Mh inst, Taihape Sub-Union sought fuller representation in Wanganui’s best fifteen, and on several occasions when this had been done the players and Sub-Union refused to support the movement. The position at the present tune was simply intolerable. It was unfortunate if the players themselves should suffer through any action of the controlling Sub-Union. Ultimately the following motion, moved by Mr McLean, and seconded by Mr Meuli, was carried unanimously; “That this Committee regards the action of the Taihape Sub-Union as a broach of faith, for representative matches must come before cup matches. The Committee considers it absolutely essential that players selected to play for Wanganui against Manawatu on the 21st inst. should do so. Failure on the part of these players to fulfil rep. engagement to result in these players bein'? excluded from the team to go on the southern tour.” Copies of this resolution were authorised to be sent to the president! and secretary of the Taihape Rugby Sub-Union.
