EDUCATION BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Wanganui Education Board was held last evening. The members present were Messrs W. A. Collins, P. C. Freeth, A. Mahon, 11. Mclntyre, A. Fraser, W. Bruce, A. J. Joblin, C. Y. Laws, Pilkington, and Hemingway. KAUANGAROA.—An application was made for the establishment of a school, the estimated attendance being about 25 children.—Decided to authorise the appointment of a to refer the matter to the chief inspector. GONVILLE SCHOOL.—A deputation from Gonville School waited oh the Board and pointed out that it was intended to lay concrete walks to improve the school grounds. Last year concrete was placed round the lower school, costing about .£l5O. The Committee also spent Jl2O in improving the grounds. It was now decided to lay concrete in the upper school grounds, which were very wet during the rainy season. The estimated cost would be about .£330 to improve the grounds as desired. The Committee also pointed out that the iron chimneys should be replaced by brick, as the present chimneys were unfit to use, and the pupils in three rooms were smoked cut when fires were lit.—Mr Hemingway said the Committee had done good work, and, in fact, work that it should not have been called upou to do, seeing that the Committee was pi'cpared to find £10(1. Tie moved* that the Board grant .£l3o.—Mrs Comyns pointed out that it was not a fair thing for tho teachers and children to have to sit in the classrooms in cold weather without fires. —The Board then decided to ask the architect to report on the matter of concrete and the chimneys. WANGANUI EAST.—A quarter-acre adjoining the school was offered for £lso.—lt was decided to apply for a grant to purchase. ' KEITH STREET INFANTS.—The matter of acquiring a property adjacent to the grounds was referred to Mr Laws for a report. CHAIRMAN’S REPORT .

Tho chairman’s report contained tho following: Queen's Park.—This work has been somewhat delayed owing to the non-ar-rival of the steel windows. These are now coming to hand. Carpenters are at work upon the, floors, and the exterior plaster work is being brought steadily ahead.

Wanganui Technical.—The brickwork in connection with the erection of the primary metal shop is now well advanced. The roof timbers arc upon the site.

Wanganui East—The bricklaying contractor lias made a start with the additions. Portions of the concrete footings have been laid, and a start should bo made with the brickwork within the next few days. The whole of the timber and joinery work has been ordered. Resignations.—The following teachers have resigned since last meeting;—Misa E. Chapman, assistant, Castlecliff; Miss C. H. Port, pupil teacher, Fcilding District High School; Miss A. P. Pice, assistant, Wanganui East; Miss D. G. Bartlett, sole teacher, Western Rangitikei; Miss A. S. Beard, sole teacher, Makohan; Miss 0. M. Cook, sole teacher, South Makirikiri; Mr G. C. Harxe, sole teacher, Tabic Elat. NEW CHAIRMAN. At the first meeting of the newly constituted Wanganui Education Board yesterday afternoon Mr VV. Bruce nominated Mr W. A. Collins for the position of chairman, and this was seconded by Mr A. Fraser. Mr H. Mclntyre, who supported the motion, stated that Mr Collins had proved himself to be a valuable member of the Board, and he felt confident he would make a good chairman. Mr Jobi 1 n then nominated Mr Fraser, and stated that the latter had been on the Board from 16 to IS years, and with hi;', intimate knowledge of Board matters end having been acting-chairman, would fill the position with credit. Mr Hemingway stated that he understood Mr Fraser was not seeking election . Mr Joblin's motion did not find a seconder, and Mr Collins was then elected. Mr Bruce congratulated Mr Collins on Lis election, and expressed pleasure at the amount of work lie had done for the Board. Mr Bruce’s remarks were supplemented by Mr P. C. Preeth. Mr Collins thanked the members of the Board for electing him, and stated that as Mr Fraser had served so many voars ho would have preferred to sea him in tho chair. However, he would promise members that they would get a fair run from him, a.nd in return ho was sure he would always have their assistance. lie regretted very much that Mr Pirani had retired, aud also Mr Bryant- He then accorded a welcome to the new members, Messrs Mahon and Laws.
