A HOUSING DIFFICULTY

(By Telegraph—Special to “Herald.”) WELLINGTON, Aug. 18. The attention of the Minister of Finance has been called by Mr Veitch to a report of a meeting of the Wanganui County Council showing that the Council received a reply from the State Advances Office relative to a loan of £IO,OOO for the purpose of purchasing land, materials, etc., for the erection of workers’ dwellings. It was pointed out that no authority is given to lend money for the purchase of land on which it is proposed to build, and unless the Council is prepared to amend its application the proposal cannot be entertained. Should the Council desire to proceed with the loan it would also be necessary to levy more than one-sixteenth of a penny in the £. Mr Veitch suggests that the Minister expedite legislation to overcome this difficulty.
