BOROUGH COUNCIL

USUAL MEETING. The usual meeting of the Borough Council was held last night, the Mayof (Mr T. B. Williams) presiding. There were also present Crs Luxford, Aitken, Richardson, Liffiton, Gower, Sigley, Spriggcns, Burnett, Sharpe, Donaldson, and Thompson. EEPORTS. Reference to the following matters were made in reports of committees; Tramway.—Mr I. Stepheson’s Resignation: The Committee recommend the Council to grant Mr Stephenson leave of absence on pay for a period of four weeks.—Adopted. Library.—Conveniences in Ridgway Street: The Committee drew the Council’s attention to the objectionable proximity of the conveniences in Ridgway Street to the Library, and in view of the postponement of the building of the new Library and Museum, recommends that these conveniences be removed. Books Donated to "Victoria Avenue School: The Committee has decided to donate 28 books selected by the chairman from those discarded, to the Victoria Avenue School as a reference library.—The clause in reference to the conveniences was referred to the V orbs Committee for consideration and report. Works.—Motor Lorry: We recommend the Council to purchase a 4-ton lorry for £1675, provided that the Itody is built to the Engineer’s requirements, and that the complete vehicle is guaranteed for twelve months. Durie Hill Elevator: The Committee has received an application for permission to erect a small shelter for the operators of the lift in Blyth Street, and has granted same during the pleasure of the Council. LIBRARY. The librarian. Miss Blackett, reported as under:—The number of books issued was a record, being C-477; 30 new books were added; 32 new subscribers were enrolled, also five juveniles. Number of adult subscribers on July 31st, 798; juveniles, 106; total 903. Miss Ball, second assistant, has resigned her position. In view of the postponement of the new building being started, the librarian made suggestions for the more convenient working of the institution.
