SPOONER’S WITHDRAWAL. Received August 17, 10.30 a.m. LONDON, August 16. Spooner, owing to injury to his knee, has reluctantly obeyed his doctor’s orders, and has withdrawn from the cricket team for Australia. TRUMPET MEMORIAL. POOR RESPONSE TO APPEAL. Received August 17, 10 a.m. SYDNEY, August 17. The Cricket Association has discussed the poor response to the appeal for funds for the Trumper memorial, <£lßo being subscribed since January. Mr McElHone, the chairman, suggested that the public should consider the widow and children rather than a memorial.
