SOUTH AFRICA’S GOVERNORGENERAL
PRINCE ARTHUR’S APPOINTMENT. Received—August 17, 12.5 p.m. CAPETOWN, August 16. Senator Aladrais objected to the appointment of Prince Arthur as Gov-ernor-General, who should be a man m sympathy with the strong feeling of the majority towards independence. Gcenral Smuts replied that the appointment was made on the direct recommendation of the Union Ministers. and the King acted on their direct advice. It was a complete proof of the high status the Union had attained, and it was in the interests of the country to have a person whose social standing isolated him from party politics.
