PERSONAL

After having been absent in Australia for five months, Mr and Mrs G. W. Hean returned to Wanganui yesterday. Mr Geo. Swan has disposed of his interests in Chavannes Hotel to Mr H. Oakley Brown, of Wellington, who contested one of the Empire City seats at the last general election. A Dunedin telegram states that Lieut.Colonel W Bruce, local A.D.M.S. for the past several months, has relinquished his position to go to India to join S.A.M.C. He leaves Dunedin on Tuesday. Air N. G. Woods, ex-president of the Wanganui Returned Soldiers’ Association, who has been receiving special treatment in the Trentham Military Hospital, is at present on a visit to Wanganui before proceeding to the Hanmer Military Hospital. Ensign Arthur Rolands, better known as “Happy Arthur,” who rode all the way from Wanganui to conduct the first Salvation Army service in Patca over 36 years a go, is still a prominent figure in Army circles, and has been lately transferred to the Auckland district. A quiet wedding was celebrated at St. Mark's Church, Wellington, on July 22, when Miss Nora M. Atkinson, youngest daughter of Mrs W. H. Atkinson, of Wanganui, was married to Mr E. W. Clarkson, eldest son of Mr and Mrs J P. Clarkson, of Blenheim. The bride was formerly a school teacher at Colyton, and the groom secretary of the Feilding Farmers’ Freezing Company. The bride was given away by a very old family friend, Mr Lloyd Jones, of Wanganui, Miss Dorothy Pogden, of Palmerston North, and little Miss Esther Goss, of Wanganui, attending as Imidesmaids. Mr Norman Bartholomew, of Feilding, acted as best man. After the ceremony relatives and friends of the bride and bridegroom wore received at the Barn Tea Rooms, where a very enjoyable afternoon was spent, Mr and Mrs Clarkson later leaving by the Moeraki for their future home in Sydney.
