NOT WANTED IN AUSTRALIA
MR HUGHES’ DENUNCIATION. SYDNEY, August 4. “Dr Mannix says he 'will reply to ms when he returns to Australia,” said the Prime Minister, Mr W. M. Hughes, last evening. “Well, when and if he returns to Australia he may do so; but, first of all, he has to return. He has boasted in his usual way about what he is going to do. He says he is going to land in Ireland. Perhaps he is, but that is for Mi Lloyd George and not for him to say.” The Prime Minister’s statement bears out the prediction that’ the Commonwealth Government is opposed to the return of Dr Mannix to this country. But the matter is certain to become a live issue in politics in the future. The aggressive Roman Catholic section will command the support of the Labour Partv, and Labour will take the side of Dr Mannix. There will be a small, but very noisy and hysterical, minority, which will agitate on behalf of the pre* late, and make a sacrificed patriot and a martvr out of him; but it will be seen that "the great, silent, solid, majority of Australians —who are constantly misrepresented in the eyes of the world by the minority—are behind Mr Hughes. Mr Hughes will welcome this chance of openly fighting his bitterest enemy, and he will make much capital out of it.
