Owing to a heavy sea the lighters were unable to continue the loading of the Hororata to-day. At the Court this mprning, a number pf cyclists, for riding on the footpaths, were fined 5/- each and costs. We understand that His Majesty’s Theatre buildings have been sold to Messrs Fuller, Ltd., at a substantial figure Owing to the indisposition of Mr Wyvern Wilson, S.M., the police court proceedings this morning were dealt with by Justices of the Peace. The cases of selling alleged short-weight bread were adjourned for a fortnight. Three steamers chartered by the N.Z. and African Company, the Durham, Hororata, and Waugaratta, at Timaru, in the last three weeks have lifted 317,708 carcases and 3647 casks of tallow and sundries for New York and Boston. It is reported that Mr Philip Norman, Governor of the Bank of England, favours increasing the bank rate to 8 per cent, for the purpose of checking speculation, also for attracting foreign balances, particularly American, thereby reducing the rate of exchange. At the Waitotara County Council meeting to-day Or. Burnet directed attention to the number of old buildings being removed from the borough and re-erected in the county. He considered that some system of inspecting and issuing permits for erecting buildings in the county should be adopted. Cr. Ross agreed that if the buildings were not good enough for the borough they were not good enough for the county. It was decided to consult the Council’s solicitor on the matter.
