Mr IV. H. Ward, after five years’ service with the local branch of tho N.Z. Insurance Company, severed his connection with the firm from Tuesday last to join his father in tho business of J. T. Ward and Son. booksellers. The occasion was marked by a pleasant little function, at which Mr Ward was the subject cf a presentation. Mr Nelson and members of tho staff spoke appreciatively of his services to the company and wished him liie best of luck in his new venture. in connection with the death of :\Lr J. R. Johns, who was a prominent official of Trinity Methodist Church, an impressive memorial service was held there yesterday morning, when the Rev. H. L. Blamircs paid a fitting and eloquent tribute to the high character of and the services rendered by the deceased in the canse of the Church and Sunday School and the Prohibition movement in Wanganui, of which latter lie was one of the pioneers and organisers. At the Waitotara County Council meeting to-day the chairman referred to the loss the town and district had sustained through the death of the late Mr T. D. Cummins. He paid a tribute to the lengthy and valuable service rendered by Mr Cummins and stated that his loss would not only be felt by Wanganui residents but also throughout the surrounding districts. A vote of condolence was carried in the usual way and it was decided to instruct the clerk to send a letter of sympathy to the relatives of deceased.
