FIVE MONTHS’ HUSTLE AT SOUTHEND
The public utility society which has been farmed at Southend has undertaken to build 1000 houses, and hopes to attain that end by September. The organisation is the Alliance Housing Association, and Lord Haldon, who is the president, occupied the chair at a meeting and declared his intention of “putting his back” into the scheme. It was announced that Hie difficulty in regard to sites would probably bo settled within the next week, and houses would be built not more than a quarter of an hour’s walk from the railway station. Full advantage is to be taken of the Government grant, and sites of houses will be approved by the Ministry. No members can have houses built according to their own tastes. The association officials expect to provide houses with three bedrooms at a cost of about i>Boo. Major Archer, the Association’s architect. said that he hoped that they would be able to build middle-class houses at a less cost than that of labourers’ cottages in some of the Government schemes.
