Under instructions from the Federal Government, the Colonial Sugar Company has increased the prices of golden syrup and treacle to <£9 per ton. A proposal has been mad© to establish a company for the inauguration of a flying-boat service between Auckland, Gisborne and Napier, and to extend the service around the coasts of both the North and South Islands should circumstances warrant.

It is anticipated that the work of issuing the British war medal to those who served in the war will be commenced within the next three months, and that the Allied victory medal will be available for distribution by the end of this year. No decision has yet been arrived at in connection with clasps, but it is understood that there are to be seven clasps for the western front and three for the other theatres of war. The Blenheim oil bore at New Plymouth is now the deepest that has been sunk in New Zealand, its present depth being 5553 feet, and it is progressing towards a stage when it will b© one of the deep bores of the world. In the whole world there are only three or four bores which have gone lower than 6600 feet. The other deep bores of New Zealand are the Huiroa, which went down considerably over 4000 feet with out reaching oil, and the No. 3 bore of the Taranaki (N.Z.) Oil Wells, Ltd., which is not far from the Blenheim bore and has attained a depth of a little over 4000 feet. It still flows on a few days a month, but the oil comes from a much higher level than the Blenheim has penetrated to.
