GOLF.

The first competition on the Wanganui Golf Club’s card for the 1920 season was played on Saturday afternoon, when a large field of about 50 pairs took part in the bogey competition set down for decision. No less than 65 pairs entered for the match, and had they all rolled up it is hard to Imagine how the games could have been got off.

As it was the popular hon. secretary, Mr J. Harold, who has not yet started playing this season, got the big field away promptly, and arranged partners for those whose opponents had not put in an appearance.

The result was that the competition was over in good time, and all enjoyed the afternoon’s play, as the weather was pea-feet, and the links, if a trifle on the dead side, were in very good order. Particularly fine form was displayed by the short handicap men, who appear to have jumped right into their stride from the very commencement of the season. The competition was won by H. Christie, a 30 handicap man, who sprang a surprise on the handicappers by returning the good score of 5 up. He played very consistently throughout, and went round well under the hundred.

D. Meldrum (2), who played round with Imlay Saunders, was in capital form. He made few mistakes at any stage of the game, and his card showed 80 for 17 holes, leaving him 2 up on the Colonel.

Gonville Saunders was also in rare fettle, and from scratch fought an even draw with bogey. His card showed that he took 76 for 17 holes. This player is playing brilliantly just now, and last week did the full round in 76, running home to the tune of 36.

7, played steady golf, and ended 1 J. M. Hussey, with a handicap of clubs cleverly just now, and should up. This player is handling his move up this season. The following were the best cards handed in:—

H. Christie (30), 5 up. D. Meldrum (2), 2 up. J. M. Hussey (7), 1 up. C. P. Worley (16), 1 down F. S. Parkes (2), 2 down. F. Beaven (8), 2 down. D. Murchie (14), 3 down.
