FOOTBALL

o SCOTLAND'S GREAT WIN AGAINST WALES. PRINCIPALITY BEATEN FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 1907. On February 7 Scotland gained a great victory over Wales at Inverleith, winning by 9 points to 5 after the Principality had obtained a lead of 5 points. This was the first defeat Wales had sustained against Scotland since 1907. There were 25,000 spectators when Scotland kicked off against the wind, but Wales were the first to attack, and only a penalty against Wetter re' lieved. Then Scotland took a turn at attacking, but nothing resulted. Kennedy narrowly missed a penalty for Scotland, while the next minute Angus was pulled down on the line. The game soon worked to the other, end, and a fine run by Wetter, Ben--yon, Shea and Jenkins ended in the last-named scoring,, while he also kicked the goal. Wales continued to press, and Pattullo was forced to touch down. A free kick to Wales only went astray by inches. Five minutes after the interval Kennedy kicked a penalty goal for Scotland, but Wales soon returned to the attack, and a fine passing run saw Williams brought down near the corner flag. After a stoppage to repair injuries to Fahmy, Shea, was brought down on the line by Crole. Sloan then (broke away* and scored for Scotland, no goal resulting. Scotland continued to press, and Kennedy kicked a penalty goal. Both Scotland and England suffered heavily in regard to international players during the waavand many new players have to be brought in. One of the most promising seen so far is J. A. R,.SeJby, who is only 18 years of age. The manner in which he held his own against the Welsh half-backs created a favourable impression, and it is indeed a noteworthy performance for one so young to fill the position of half-back with distinction. He showed himself to be full of resourcefulness, and altogether did very well, particularly as he was behind forwards who were often , beaten for possession of the ball in the -scrums. As Wales has won 10 out of the • last 12 games against Scotland, the result of the match under notice has naturally given much satisfaction to Scots.; ■B—|— p———MM—i——^BW—M..
