The vessel left Timaru on Friday, April 16, and had a very rough trip. On April 17th, a fierce northerly gale was encountered, and the vessel was buffeted about severely. The water tanks on deck had to be emptied to lighten her. Tempestuous seas continned throughout the following day and the decks were continually awash. The cargo shifted and the vessel developed a list to starboard. The weather moderated on April 20, and the cargo was rearranged. Ojj Monday last the barque again ran into heavy weather, and was violently tossed about The Manurewa left Wanganui last September to load copra at Nienfou, in the Tongan group, for San Francisco. During the latter part of the voyage she encountered rough weather and was driven to the northward. The crew ran short of provisions and had to shoot seabirds for food. They were down to their last bag of flour when San Francisco was reached. The Mannrewa subsequently loaded case oil for Timaru. SAN FRANCISCO SERVICE. The Makura arrived at Vancouver on Monday last and was timed to leave on the return trip on Friday. The Niagara is to sail from Auckland for Vancouver next Wednesday. A Press Association message from Dunedin states that the Union Company has announced that the Moana, which sailed on Friday for San Francisco will, on jier return to Wellington in June, withdraw from the service, her place being taken in the meantime by the Marama, sailing from Wellington about June 8.
