By “ACHILLES.” The excellent acceptances received for the various events to be decided tomorrow—the opening day of the ■ Egmont meeting—augurs well for the success of the gathering. The meetings held at Hawera are always very enjoyable, and doubtless there will be a big crowd on the course to-morrow if the weather is favourable. There arc some good horses engaged, and the racing should be full of interest. Lord Kenilworth reads well in the. Flying, in which Hymestra also slufukl show good form. In the Meremere Hack there will be a big field, including Flying Master, Santorini, and Alice Montrose, all winners at the Taranaki meeting. There are ten left in the Hurdle Race, including Explorer, which won at New Plymouth. He, will probably be kept very busy by Zola. The Sweet Simon gelding is in capital form, and is likely to he favourite. The Cup field is likely to be a strong one. Client is at the head of affairs at 8.11, and he is said to be very well, in which case he "will take, a lot of beating; Kilmoon and Marqueteur are, however, a pair which are much fancied by the knowing ones. The two light weights, Risingham and Rose Queen, are expected to run well, and should ensure fast pace. t Amherine in the Waipnpa Hack, Trespass in the Welter, and Army Service in the Ladies’ Piirse, should be hard to beat if they start in, their respective engagements. The Egmont Stakes promises to be a

splendid race, as the field will include Silver Link and Acre, and the meeting of that pair should be very interesting. TRAIN ARRA NG KM ENTS. A special train will leave Wanganui to-morrow and Thursday, for the Hawora racecourse, at 6.45 sum., arriving at the course itself at 10.60 a.m. This train will leave the course at 5.60 p.iu. after the last race, getting to Wanganui at 9.32 p.m. Full particulars of the train arrangements appear on page one of this issue. Weights for the Wanganui J.C. meeting are due next Friday, and acceptances will close on the 23rd inst. Nomination for the Rangitikci club’s annual meeting close on Saturday, 21st inst., at 8 p.m. Explorer, who scored on the second day at New Plymouth, has a couple of wins over hurdles to his credit in Victoria. He carried 11.0 to victory at Flemington, putting up the good time of 3.46 3-5. He is a well-bred gelding, by the successful French sire Kenilworth, from Tilga, by Rice, from Mersey’s Daughter, by Trenton—Mersey (darn of Carbine). On his form of late, Amythaa 9.1 is fired into the Dunedin Cup, and on tbe day of the race there may not be enough competitors to enable a second dividend to be paid out. Mr ,1. do Rothschild is credited with taking £IOO,OOO out of the English ring over the win of his horse Brigand in the Cambridgeshire. Kilmoon. a dead-heater in the Wellington (hip, was under offer to a Dunedin owner at 300 bovs. prior to the Auckland summer meeting. Risingham is said to be doing capital work at Hawcra, and one scribe says ho is almost sure to win a race at the Egmont meeting. He is in the Cup at the minimum. An Auckland writer says: 'The many friends of the veteran trainer 11. French will regret to hear that he is not enjoying the best of health, and is at present receiving medical attention. A speedy recovery will be wished the veteran. There seems a good prospect of Toa Tero figuring as a hurdler at* an early date. Idle Maniapoto gelding is credited with performing his schooling lessons in a proficient manner; and, as a result ho has been accorded a nomination for tkc two loading hurdle races, set down to ho run at the Wanganui Jockey Club’s Autumn meeting. In the event of Toa Tere training on properly, ho should bo equal to registering pome noteworthy feats over the battens for he looks the cut of the jumper. At Taranaki on Thursday, Silver Link furnished pleasing evidence of retaining her pace, when she carried a 51b penalty to victory in the Taranaki Stakes, beating Hyme.stra (9st.), Right; and Left (7st.) and Golden Bibble (Bst. 71h.) The bay daughter of Achilles and Secret Link was sent out favourite, so that solid evidence was forthcoming that she was considered to be in a position to reproduce her best form. Silver lank is engaged in the Egmont Stakes to he run to-morrow, in which she is penalised slb. POVERTY BAT ACCEPTANCES. GISBORNE, February 9. Maiden Handicap, U miles.—Stella C. 1 second.
