GENERAL MONASH’S BOOK.
Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON. February 8. The Manchester Guardian, in a leader on General Monash’s book, pays a warm tribute to General Monash’s resources and brilliant leadership, but mildly protests against his reference to the British third corps of infantry failing to reach their ultimate objective,' which be indirectly suggests was due to faulty staff co-ordination or faulty local leadership. The correct explanation is that the third corps northward of the Somme had the- most difficult ground to cover. Absence of recognition of this difference is an instance of the few failings in judgment of others by the wonderful Australian troops. With the exception of a few isolated units, they are the greatest of all modem soldiers, probably the greatest in history. They are so supreme in every other martial quality that they could well afford bo practise complete generosity in their judgment of comrades.
