KNG INFER’S REPORT. The Engineer (Mr T. Dix) reported a# under for the mouth of January; The metal roads show signs of improvement after the wet spell. Unfortunately it is impossible to utilise tho roller during the wet weather through the difficulty in shifting it from the roadside on to the metal, because of its excessive weight. Only a small quantity of Belmont metal arrived during the month. Apparently it wap. held up by tbe Railway Department through tho heavy calls oil the rolling stock. If Belmont metal is to be used in future, it will be necessary to obtain it during the winter months, as then the railway traffic is not so heavy. The culverts on the main roads are generally too small—being six inches in diameter—to carry off the storm waler. It is proposed to replace the most necessary culverts with nine inch concrete pipes. A load of pipes has been ordered for Waitotara, Okehu, and Westmero respectively. Main Road: Sixty yards of chips have been ordered from Belmont for tarsealing. The roller is to be kept on the length of road between Maxwelltown and Busliy Park Road until sufficient Belmont metal arrives at Kai Iwi to warrant metalling of the east of Kai Iwi.
